Savage Zoology

Game 10: Barrie Baycats @ Toronto Maple Leafs - June 4, 2014

A bay cat is an actual thing.

Bay cats are native to the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia.  These wild jungle cats are nocturnal and rarely seen in the open.  They are described as secretive in nature, but definitely savage when hunting.

The Barrie Baycats displayed a savage tendency from the very first at bat against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Christie Pits last night.  Their batters roared out of the dugout like a line of jungle cats.  They mauled Toronto pitching early and often and scored double digit runs two times over, en route to a 20-8 win.

Among the damage:

Four home runs by the Baycats – two from Brendan Keys, and one apiece from Jason Coker and Jeff Cowan.  The Baycats pounded out 17 hits.

The only starter who did not get a hit was Kyle DeGrace, who came out of the game in the 1st inning.  DeGrace was injured on a baserunning play, when a ball bounced into his face as he slid into second.  (He later tweeted that he had a broken nose and a couple of shiners, but he's OK.)

Watching the beatdown unfold (9-0 after one inning; 13-0 after four innings), fans seated around the Pits began asking in hushed tones whether the IBL has a mercy rule.  It does not.

The Maple Leafs took their lumps and played on to the bitter end.  They managed to put 8 runs of their own on the board.  Damon Topolie and Jon Waltenbury each homered and racked up four RBIs between them.  Glenn Jackson got three hits and two RBIs.  The Leafs racked up 12 hits in total, and almost everyone on the roster got in some playing time.  Now they turn the page and move on.

The beatdown started early and kept going.  Lots of hits, runs, and grotesque looking ERAs among the Maple Leafs' pitching staff today.  You can check out the boxscore link below for yourself.
