The Dry Spell Continues

Game 21: Barrie Baycats at Toronto Maple Leafs, July 17, 2018 (rescheduled rainout)

Baycats win 13-1

The hillsides are looking parched.

It's been a hot, dry summer and the slopes of Christie Pits look it. Brown and dusty instead of lush green.

Dominico Field is well-tended, but its defenders -- those lovable rogues the Toronto Maple Leafs -- are also in the throes of a dry spell.

Last night they lost their sixth in a row, falling 13-1 to the Barrie Baycats.

After both clubs traded scoreless frames for the first two innings, the visitors took the lead and never looked back. They roughed up starter Marek Deska for 14 hits and racked up ten runs (nine earned) through the first five innings. After that, they cruised to victory and back to sole possession of first place in the standings.

Barrie starter Santos Arias pitched six and held the Leafs to one run. It came off the bat of catcher Justin Marra (receiving high fives above), as he thrashed his ninth homer of the season.

The Leafs scraped out just five hits on the night, as this late-season dry spell continues.

You've got to deal with it the best way you can. For some, it's drinks and loud metal.

Barrie 13-21-1
Toronto 1-5-2

W - Arias (4-2, 1.95)
L - Deska (1-4, 7.50)

BOXSCORE

The Leafs dip below .500 for the first time this season. Their 13-14 record keeps them in fourth place in the IBL standings, ahead of the Brantford Red Sox. They are now 6 1/2 games behind the Baycats. The lovable rogues depart for a two-game road trip starting in Kitchener on Thursday night, July 19.
