Series Opener Slips From Leafs' Grasp

IBL Quarterfinals - Game 1 - August 21, 2025

Toronto Maple Leafs at Barrie Baycats

Barrie 3 - Toronto 2
Barrie leads series 1-0

Wilgenis Alvarado pitched a masterpiece for the Leafs.

Late last night in the parking lot of Athletic Kulture Stadium, an overstimulated fan of the Barrie Baycats began berating others making their way to their vehicles.

"HOW MANY INNINGS IN BASEBALL," he roared at the top of his voice.  "HOW MANY??"

And pause.

Let's rewind and explain why a grown man would be screaming basic baseball questions at total strangers in darkness.

The ballpark was the setting for the opening game of the 2025 quarterfinal series between the Baycats and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Starters Frank Garces and Wilgenis Alvarado brought their A-games and pitched an intense duel.

Over the first couple of innings, the Baycats recorded a lone hit off the Toronto southpaw.

In the top of the third, leftfielder Luca Boscarino hit Garces with a jab for a single.  Third baseman Ryan Dos Santos teased out a walk to put two runners aboard.  DH Jhon Javier followed with a solid shot to the outfield and both runners scored.

After a season of drama and drudgery, the Playoff Leafs were back.

As if a switch had been flipped, the normally quiet Leaf bench came alive with chatter and electricity.  The Leafs were ahead 2-0 and the lead held as the innings went along.

Bravo Alvarado.  He kept the Baycats off the board until the bottom of the sixth inning.  He gave up a single to Noel McGarry Doyle.  A double by Francisco Hernandez brought the runner across the plate.  Alvarado departed the game after pitching six magnificent innings.  He gave up four hits, struck out seven, and walked none.  It was a 2-1 ballgame after six.

As the outs began to trickle away for Barrie, tension around the ballpark increased.

Josh Berenbaum pitched a scoreless seventh.

Garces laboured through eight innings.  He finished the night after throwing 133 pitches, but more importantly he kept the Leafs from adding more runs to their tally.

Luis Florentino entered the game and pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth.  The Dominican has the demeanour of a gentle giant, but he throws killer stuff.  The inning ended with a strikeout and the Baycats were down to their final three outs.

A nervous giddiness could be sensed around the Leafs' dugout.  A Game 1 victory was in their grasp, a big momentum swing to open the series.  They could have used some more runs for a comfortable finish, but they'd have to make due with a one-run lead.  Javier's two-run double in the third represented their only scoring on the night.  Boscarino and second baseman Dan Marra were the only other Leafs to record a hit.

The bottom of the ninth inning began like the previous one ended.  Florentino struck out the leadoff batter.  But then, the entire dynamic of the previous eight innings shifted.  Mist began to seep over the outfield.  The pitcher lost his edge.  The visitors' throats tightened.  The Baycats rallied for two singles and a walk to load the bases.  A sacrifice fly by Tyler Plumpton scored the runner from third to tie the game.  The runner on second moved to third on the play.  Florentino worked a 1-2 count on the next batter, and then there followed one of those moments that unfolded as if in slow motion.  The next pitch skipped out of catcher Justin Marra's glove and bounced to the backstop.  Marra pounced on it as Florentino ran to cover home.  The toss back to the pitcher sailed high and past the mound.  The runner on third sprinted home and slid across the plate with the game-winning run.

Bedlam in Barrie.  A 3-2 walk off victory and Game 1 to the home side.

The stunned Leafs shuffled off the field while the Baycats converged around the plate in celebration.

Florentino took the hard-luck loss and reliever Braedan Pakkala grabbed the win.

This series switches over to Christie Pits immediately tonight, where the Leafs will have a chance to hit reset with a win at home.

Cutting back to the scene in the parking lot, where the unhinged Barrie fan was berating everyone en masse.

"HOW MANY INNINGS IN BASEBALL, HOW MANY??"

After a beat, he continued his oration.

"ONE TO EIGHT DON'T MATTER!  IT'S THE LAST ONE!  THE LAST ONE COUNTS!"

On this night, he was right.

Toronto 2 3 1
Barrie 3 6 0

W - Pakkala (1-0, 0.00)
L - Florentino (0-1, 5.40)

It's on to Game 2 right away with a Friday nighter at Christie Pits.  Game time tonight is 7:30 PM.

Postseason Preview: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Barrie Baycats - 2025 Quarterfinal Series

Best Frenemies: the Baycats and the Maple Leafs are at it again.

This week, the hunt for the Dominico Cup goes into high gear.

The 2025 IBL postseason kicks off tomorrow, with eight clubs vying to become champions of Canada's best baseball league.

And looky looky, if it ain't the Toronto Maple Leafs kicking off their run for the Cup against none other than the Barrie Baycats.  It's like these two cannot be apart longer than a minute.

This best-of-five quarterfinal series opens at Athletic Kulture Stadium, located far and deep within the Canadian Shield.

QUARTERFINALS SCHEDULE

GAME 1: Thursday, August 21 - Toronto Maple Leafs at Barrie Baycats, 7:35 pm at Athletic Kulture Stadium

GAME 2: Friday, August 22 - Barrie Baycats vs Toronto Maple Leafs, 7:30 pm at Christie Pits

GAME 3: Sunday, August 24 - Toronto Maple Leafs at Barrie Baycats, 4:05 pm at Athletic Kulture Stadium

GAME 4 (if necessary): Tuesday, August 26 - Barrie Baycats vs Toronto Maple Leafs, 7:30 pm at Christie Pits

GAME 5 (if necessary): Wednesday, August 27 - Toronto Maple Leafs at Barrie Baycats, 7:35 pm at Athletic Kulture Stadium

REGULAR SEASON COMPARISON

Usually with these previews I do a comparison of regular season stats between the two clubs.

What can I say other than this:

This season, the Leafs scored a hella lotta runs, and gave up a hella lotta runs.

The Leafs scored 268 runs in 42 games, second most in the IBL.  The Baycats were right behind them with 261 runs scored.

The real eye-popping stat is runs allowed.  The Baycats gave up 233.  The Leafs gave up 335, over a hundred more.  This would be dismaying were it not for the fact that the Regular Season Maple Leafs and Postseason Maple Leafs tend to be entirely different clubs, especially in recent years.

Should we be concerned with maybe a jittery rotation?  Maybe a leaky bullpen?

If you are concerned at this point, get off the wagon.  This ride is not for you.  The swan boats at Centreville might be more your speed.

This time of year it's either a rampage to sweet glory or a mouthful of dirt, and who knows what these Leafs will feed us.  Knees might get skinned, teeth might get chipped, hopes might get dashed.  The only thing we know for sure is that the Leafs' first test will be against their best frenemies from the north.

This year, they split the season series with three wins apiece.

THE HISTORIC RIVALRY

This quarterfinal series is the tenth postseason clash between the Leafs and Baycats.

Barrie has won six of the previous nine series.

The first postseason encounter between the two clubs was back in 2002.  The Baycats franchise was in just its second year of existence.  The Leafs beat them 4-0 in the semifinal, then went on to win the IBL Championship.

In 2005, the Leafs and Baycats met in the IBL finals.  Barrie won the series 4-2 and became IBL champions for the first time.

The other series results:

2009 SF - Barrie 4-1
2012 QF - Barrie 4-2
2015 SF - Barrie 4-3
2016 Finals - Barrie 4-0
2021 SF - Toronto 2-0
2022 QF - Toronto 3-0
2024 QF - Barrie 3-0

The Leafs and Baycats have played 40 postseason games all-time, with Barrie holding a 23-17 lead.

What happens next?  That's the fun of baseball.  See you at the ballpark and GO LEAFS GO!

Toronto Maple Leafs 2025 Regular Season Leaderboard

Ryan Dos Santos

For statheads, the Toronto Maple Leafs put up some wild numbers to pore over this year.

Historic numbers, record-breaking numbers.

Terror on the Basepaths

It starts with Ryan Dos Santos, the newest owner of an IBL single season record.

In 2025, Dos Santos continued to be an on-base-getting and run-scoring machine for the Leafs.  He walked 46 times, breaking the record of 44 established by former Leaf Bill Byckowski way back in 1988.

Dos Santos was a terror on the basepaths this season.  He stole 15 bases.  The next-highest tally on the team was 3 swipes by Dennis Dei Baning.

El Blanco also scored 45 runs, twelve more than the next man on the club, Jhon Javier.

Home Run King

The 2025 Leafs had a record-breaker, and they also had a bona fide candidate for IBL MVP in Jordan Castaldo.

This season as every season, Castaldo played with ferocious focus and excellence.

He batted .336, second behind only Marcus Knecht.  He led the team with 38 RBIs and a  1.148 OPS.

Best of all, and I'm going to say this loudly for the MVP voters.  Castaldo hit more home runs than anyone else in the IBL despite missing a quarter of the season.  His 12 round trips earned him the IBL home run crown and the undying devotion of fans at Christie Pits, who get to watch this man play baseball for free.

The Core Four Eight

In 2025, a core of eight players dominated the club's offensive statistics.

The biggest beasts were, as expected, Jordan Castaldo and Marcus Knecht.  They were backed up by newcomers Dennis Dei Baning and Jhon Javier.  Rounding off the top eight were Ryan Dos Santos, Dan Marra, Justin Marra and Spenser Ross.

A couple of rookies - Ben Sitarenios and Spencer MacInnis -  joined them in most of the categories below, offering a preview of what the next generation might bring to the Pits in the coming years.

As dominant as the Leafs were at the plate, their Achilles' heel was pitching, as it is most years in the bandbox that is Christie Pits.

The Leafs went through a lot of arms this year, trying this, trying that, never quite finding a stable rotation and having an even worse time with the bullpen.

Towards the end of the year, the trio of Wilgenis Alvarado, Josh Berenbaum and Franklin Hernandez emerged as three solid starters.  Luis Florentino stood out as a candidate for closer.  For everyone else it was all hands on deck, whenever and wherever.

Classic Finish Launches Leafs Into Postseason

Maple Leafs Weekly Recap - August 12 to 18, 2025

A Christie Pits thriller wrapped up the Leafs' regular season in Week Fourteen.

Ayami Sato returned to the mound at Christie Pits to start the final game of the regular season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs played a pair of games to wrap up the final week of the 2025 IBL regular season.

It was a home-and-home series against the Brantford Red Sox.

Already eliminated from the postseason, the Sox had nothing to play for but pride and a surprise hey-now-the-pressure's-off home win streak.  The Brantfords have done so well at home in August that they eclipsed the home record of the Leafs.

The club's rogue scorekeeper-slash-historian may be able to correct my next assumption, but I can't remember a year when the Leafs won only six games at home.

They saved the best for last, however.  The regular season finale at Christie Pits was a thriller in the old style.

Another huge Saturday night crowd watched Ayami Sato make her final regular season start.  The game featured almost nonstop scoring, a monster night at the plate for Jordan Castaldo, and the breaking of an IBL record by Ryan Dos Santos.  For at least one night, the Pits was a field of dreams again.

Here is the recap of Week Fourteen in Leafs baseball.

Friday, August 15, 2025 - Toronto Maple Leafs at Brantford Red Sox

The IBL's newest tradition, a Brantford sun delay.

Guessing that when the grounds of what became Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford were first laid down in 1919 or whenever, it was not imagined they would ever play night games there.

I did some research* and it looks like the home of the IBL's Red Sox is the only ballpark in North America where home plate faces due west.

Making the trip to Telephone City for the Toronto Maple Leafs' final road game of the year, I got to experience the IBL's newest tradition, a sun delay.

For decades, night games at Brantford only began once the sun had set.  This year, the club's new ownership received permission to move their start times up to 7:15 PM.  The switch has produced some peculiar scenarios.  Some games have gotten under way only to be halted when the setting sun threatened to blind batters, catchers and umpires.  Thus was born the Brantford sun delay.

On Friday night, the life-giving fireball of our solar system caused a 45-minute delay before a single pitch was thrown.  We waited it out and the game started at the traditional time of 8:00 PM.

Toronto took an early lead in the top of the second inning.  With the bases loaded, DH Connor Lewis stroked a single off starter Connor Irvine that drove in two runs.

Franklin Hernandez made the start on the mound for the Leafs.  After pitching a couple of scoreless innings, he was touched up for one run in the third and three more in the fourth.  Marek Deska bailed him out of further trouble but the Red Sox went ahead 4-2 after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Leafs got one run back thanks to a sac fly off the bat of centerfielder Dennis Dei Baning.  That made it 4-3 through five.

After that, the visitors would score no more.  Greg Carrington and Nathan Currah combined to pitch the final three innings for Toronto.  The Red Sox put three more runs on the board and extended their late-season home win streak to five games with a 7-3 FINAL score.  Brantford fans will be left to wonder where these wins were when it still counted, as the Red Sox failed to qualify for the IBL postseason for the second year in a row.

Irvine got the win, Hernandez got the loss, and the Leafs' travelling caravan turned for home and the next day's season finale at Christie Pits.

* I did no research.

Brantford 7 9 1

Saturday, August 16, 2025 - Brantford Red Sox vs Toronto Maple Leafs

Jordan Castaldo had an average day at the office.  The future first-ballot Hall of Famer drove in 8 runs and hit a grand slam.

The regular season finale at Christie Pits was dubbed the Field of Dreams game.

The Toronto Maple Leafs warmed up in vintage shirts and wore hats with a retro club logo.  They emerged through a "cornfield" and took their places for the anthem accompanied by players from a local junior team.

A roily and momentous game followed.

As she did on opening day, Ayami Sato started on the mound.  While she never emerged as an ace for the Leafs, her impact on the club this year has been undeniable.  Despite disappointing stats, she remained a consummate professional and teammate, and one of the faces of this year's team.

Neither starter went deep.  Sato pitched into the third inning and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits.  Her opposite, the Brantford Red Sox's Noah Law, couldn't make it out of the second.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jordan Castaldo doubled in a pair of runs.

In the bottom of the second, Castaldo hit a grand slam.  Not only did it put the Leafs ahead 6-3, but Castaldo's thunderbolt was his twelfth of the season and he clinched the 2025 IBL home run title.

Some additional context to Castaldo's achievement.  This year, he missed 11 games.  Despite playing basically 3/4 of a season he still hit more home runs than anyone else in the IBL.  If that's not an MVP performance I don't know what is.  Future generations will envy us that we were able to watch Castaldo play baseball at Christie Pits, and we watched for free.

The game slogged on and both sides took turns tagging each other's pitchers.  Adam Jafine and Wilgenis Alvarado combined to pitch 3.2 innings in relief of Sato, but they gave up a total of nine runs (four earned).  The Leafs racked up 15 hits to Brantford's 11.  Runs were scored in almost every half-inning through the end of the sixth.

In the bottom of the fourth, centerfielder Dennis Dei Baning hit a two-run bomb to tie the game at 9-9.

In the bottom of the fifth, Castaldo rapped a single that scored two runs.  That put the Leafs ahead 11-9 and gave Castaldo 8 RBIs on the day.

Brantford surged ahead with four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 13-11 lead.

The bottom of the sixth was decisive.  Brothers Justin (first baseman) and Dan (second baseman) Marra got aboard with a single and a walk.  Left fielder Ben Sitarenios singled and Justin scored on a fielding error.  With two men on, DH Mike Cecchetto bopped the game-winning hit.  Both runners scored on Cecchetto's single, the Leafs went ahead 14-13 and the Pits erupted.

IBL record alert: this was the game where Ryan Dos Santos wrote his name into league history.  Dos Santos led off the first inning with a roaring double, but later in the game he drew a pair of walks to set a new IBL single season record with 46 bases on balls.  The previous record of 44 was set by the Leafs' Bill Byckowski in 1988.

Luis Florentino pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Leafs.  He surrendered just one hit while striking out five.

As the game ticked over the three hours, forty minutes mark, Matt Brown ended the night.  A pair of swinging strikeouts helped him retire the side and secure a 14-13 FINAL for the Leafs.  Alvarado grabbed the win while the loss was hung on Tyler Soucie.

A momentous evening with a winning outcome.  This one might go down as my favourite game of the year.

Brantford 13 15 1
Toronto 14 11 5

W - Alvarado (4-2, 5.72)
L - Soucie (0-1,11.57)
S - Brown (1)

So endeth the 2025 regular season.

Despite springtime high hopes, the Leafs finished seventh in the IBL standings.  Their 18-24 record left them 13 games behind the Welland Jackfish.

On to the postseason, beginning with the best-of-five quarterfinals.  As if destined by fate, the Leafs will face their historic rivals the Barrie Baycats.  The series opens in Barrie this Thursday night.
