Who would rally first?
That was the question last night as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Welland Jackfish battled in Game 3 of their semifinal series at Welland Stadium.
Before the game commenced, the Jackfish displayed a tribute and held a moment of silence to honour Peter Topolie, father of Damon and long-time coach for the Leafs.
With heavy hearts, the Leafs took the field hoping to wrap up the series with a third straight win.
For most of the evening, the game was a tight contest between two clubs that lit up the scoreboards in their first two matchups. This time, runs were at a premium in the early going.
One for Welland in the first.
One for Toronto in the third: after leading off the inning with a double, left fielder Greg Carrington was cashed in by catcher Justin Marra.
Another for the Jackfish in the bottom of the third gave the home side a 2-1 lead.
Starters Rich Corrente and Zach Sloan dueled through three before Sloan handed the ball to Sam Greene.
The Jackfish edged further ahead in the bottom of the 5th with two runs off Greene.
The Leafs got one back in the top of the 6th. Right fielder Marcus Knecht singled and was driven in by second baseman Dan Marra.
Welland scored another off Greene in the bottom of the 6th to make it 5-2. Still a tight game, still anyone's for the taking.
Then came the rally. Bottom of the 7th, the Jackfish scored three runs off reliever Marek Deska to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
Despite getting as many hits as Welland, the Mapes were unable to respond with rallies of their own. Welland tacked on two more in the 8th and Corrente pitched a complete game 10-2 FINAL.
Toronto 2 11 2
Welland 10 11 0
W - Corrente (2-0, 1.20)
L - Sloan (0-1, 6.00)
The Jackfish survive to play another day, and the Leafs will get another chance to advance in Game 4.
