A family commitment kept me from Christie Pits today. As punishment, the Toronto Maple Leafs played the game of the season -- a 9th inning comeback that saw the entire team come to bat and overcome a 5-run deficit to beat the Brantford Red Sox 11-8.
Brantford led the entire game, from the 1st inning to the bottom of the 9th. This was no explosive blowout however. Over eight innings, they scored runs one at a time, building up a 5-3 lead. In the top of the 9th, they added three more to make it 8-3.
Down to their final three outs and trailing by five, the Leafs came up to bat facing reliever Tyler Soucie. And then this happened:
Raul Borjas - hit by pitch.
Dan Marra - flyball out.
Tyler Mitchell [pinch hitting for Damon Topolie] - walk.
Sean Mattson - walk.
Tony Alvarez - advances to 1B, error by second baseman. BORJAS SCORES, MITCHELL SCORES.
Brantford 8, Toronto 5.
Jalen Harris - home run. MATTSON SCORES, ALVAREZ SCORES, HARRIS SCORES.
Brantford 8, Toronto 8.
Darryl Pui - walk.
[Pitching Substitution - Dylan Grosul in for Tyler Soucie.]
Grant Tamane - walk.
Jon Waltenbury - home run. PUI SCORES, TAMANE SCORES, WALTENBURY SCORES.
Toronto 11, Brantford 8.
An eight-run rampage through the batting order and the Leafs were walkoff winners. It was, in a word, "EPIC".
Brantford 8-11-3
Toronto 11-9-2
W - Lawrence (3-3)
L - Soucie (0-2)
BOXSCORE
The Maple Leafs are now 14-14 and in 5th place, 9 games behind the Barrie Baycats. They travel to Barrie for their next game, on Tuesday, July 15.
