Brantford Bashes Back (Doubleheader Game 2)

Game 26: Brantford Red Sox at Toronto Maple Leafs - July 5, 2015

Red Sox win 6-2

After losing the first game of a Christie Pits doubleheader in dramatic fashion, the Brantford Red Sox earned a split with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.

The visitors eked out a couple of early runs against Marek Deska, ace of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  In the 4th inning, they knocked him hard and ran up a 6-0 lead that the Leafs were unable to overcome this time.

On the other side of the bump, Matt Martinow held the home side to 5 hits and 2 runs en route to the win.  Raul Borjas and Tyler Mitchell supplied the RBIs -- it was Borjas' fourth of the day, but not enough to foster a second epic comeback this afternoon.

Game Recap:

In the rubber match of their three-game weekend series, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brantford Red Sox sent Marek Deska and Matt Martinow to the mound.

After a scoreless 1st inning by both sides, the Red Sox got to Deska in the second.  First baseman Dan Jagdeo doubled, catcher Brandon Dailey singled, and shortstop Jeff Hunt singled to score Jagdeo.  1-0 Sox after two innings.

A solo home run by third baseman Nate DeSouza put the Sox ahead 2-0 after three innings.

The Red Sox put the hammer down in the 4th.  Jagdeo started things off by taking first base on an error.  Hunt and right fielder Marcus Beal followed with singles to load the bases.   Left fielder Josh McCurdy then cleared them with a three-run double.  Second baseman Benjamin Bostick doubled as well, scoring McCurdy and giving the Sox a commanding 6-0 lead midway through the 4th inning.

After sitting out a couple of games with a wounded wing, Jon Waltenbury returned to action in the second half of the doubleheader.  He doubled off Martinow and scored on a single by leftfielder Raul Borjas.  After 4 innings, it was 6-1 for the visitors.

The Leafs kept chipping away.  In the bottom of the 5th, first baseman Damon Topolie led off with a double.  He advanced to third on a 6-3 putout by third baseman Sean Mattson, then scored on a 6-3 putout by centerfielder Tyler Mitchell.  6-2 Red Sox after five innings.

With one out in the bottom of the 6th, Matt Betts relieved Martinow and kept the Leafs off the board.

Tyler Soucie came in to pitch the bottom of the 7th and secured the win with a 1-2-3 inning.*  The Leafs didn't have another dramatic comeback in them on this day, and Brantford took the game with a 6-2 final.

* IBL doubleheader games are seven innings long.
