Round One to the Red Sox

Game 25: Toronto Maple Leafs at Brantford Red Sox - July 3, 2015

Red Sox win 4-2

I packed two sets of music for the Toronto Maple Leafs' road trips to southwestern Ontario this week: some boisterous Jamaican ska, and some apocalyptic metal.  The outcomes of the games at London and Brantford would determine the playlist for the late night drives home.

Haven't heard one note of ska this week.

The Leafs kicked off a three game weekend series against the Red Sox at Brantford last night.  They fell behind early and were unable to claw their way back, losing 4-2.

Epic track.  But things were not entirely bad.  One bright note to the visit was that I rolled into town early enough to stop at Bell City Brewery, makers of Eureka Cream Ale.

From the outside, Bell City looks like a nondescript storefront in the strip mall that time forgot.  Inside is where the magic happens.  If you dabble in micro-breweries and want to taste a damn fine cream ale, do yourself a favour.

Whole lot of talk here about anything but baseball.  Let's just cut to the recap.

Game Recap:

It was Nathan Forer squaring off against Justin Cicatello as the Brantford Red Sox welcomed the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first of a three-game weekend series.

Leftfielder Connor Lewis got things going for the Leafs with a leadoff walk and a stolen base.  But Lewis would end the inning stranded at third - and he limped off the field after hurting himself on the basepaths.  Kyle Redinger came in to replace him in left.

The Red Sox jumped on Cicatello in the bottom of the 1st.  Centerfielder Nate DeSouza doubled and DH Terrell Alliman walked.  Leftfielder Nic Burdett then drove them both in with a double.  Shortstop Brandon Dailey followed with another double to plate Burdett and it was 3-0 for the home side after one.

Leafs Centerfielder Tyler Mitchell led off the top of the 3rd with a walk and a stolen base.  He moved to third on a groundout by Redinger, then scored on a wild pitch.  3-1 Red Sox after three.

In the bottom of the 4th, third baseman Jeff Hunt singled to leadoff, moved to second on an error, stole third, and scored on a groundout by rightfielder Benjamin Bostick.  4-1 Red Sox after four.

The Leafs got one right back as first baseman Will Richards, third baseman Johnathan Solazzo and second baseman Dan Marra each singled.  Marra's hit brought Richards home to make it 4-2 after five.

The Red Sox turned it over to their bullpen as Matt Betts pitched a scoreless 6th and 7th inning, Christian Garcia pitched a scoreless 8th, and Tyler Soucie pitched a scoreless 9th to record his 5th save of the season and a 4-2 final for the Red Sox.

Toronto 2-9-1
Brantford 4-10-0

W - Forer (4-2, 2.70)
L - Cicatello (2-2, 3.19)
