Game 31: Toronto Maple Leafs at Barrie Baycats - July 16, 2015

Baycats win 9-8

The Baycats scored four runs in the bottom of the 9th to win a seesaw battle with the Toronto Maple Leafs in Barrie tonight.

Game Recap:

The Baycats welcomed the Leafs to Coates Stadium for the second half of their home-and-home series.

Santos Arias and Justin Lawrence took to the mound for their respective sides.  Both pitchers rolled through the first couple of innings.

Barrie got on the board in the bottom of the third.  Centerfielder Glenn Jackson led off with a double and then rightfielder Ryan Spataro and catcher Kyle DeGrace followed with walks to load the bases.  Lawrence then uncorked a wild pitch to first baseman Jordan Castaldo that allowed Jackson to come home with the first run of the game.  Castaldo then walked to reload the bases.  Third baseman Kevin Atkinson singled to move everyone up a base and Spataro scored.  A bases-loaded walk to leftfielder Steve Lewis brought DeGrace home.  Second baseman Jeff Cowan hit into a double play that allowed Castaldo to score, and made it 4-0 Baycats after three.

In the top of the 4th inning, the Leafs began their clawback (ha).  Shortstop Grant Tamane reached first base on an error, then came all the way around to score on a double by second baseman Dan Marra.  Leftfielder Jon Waltenbury then reached first on an error.  Marra moved to third on the play, and was driven in on a sac fly by third baseman Sean Mattson.  4-2 Baycats after four.

The Leafs jumped ahead in the fifth.  DH Damon Topolie singled, moved to second on a groundout by catcher Brendan Keys, and scored on a single by Tamane, who reached second base on the play.  A single by Marra moved Tamane to third, and a single by Waltenbury drove him home.  Mattson hit a fielder's choice that scored Marra and made it 5-4 Leafs after five innings.

With two outs in the top of the 6th inning, Keys singled off of Arias.  Keys stole second, then scored on another RBI single by Tamane.  6-4 Leafs after six.

Waltenbury singled to lead off the top of the 7th.  He moved to second on a putout by Mattson, and to third on a single by rightfielder Will Richards.  A walk to centerfielder Tyler Mitchell loaded the bases. First baseman Johnathan Solazzo hit into a fielder's choice that scored Waltenbury.  Topolie then singled to score Richards and bring an end to Arias' night.  He was relieved by Chris England, who struck out Keys, but it was now 8-4 Leafs midway through the 7th.

Barrie got one back in the bottom of the frame.  Jackson singled and moved to second on a putout by Spataro.  A single by DeGrace drove him in and it was 8-5 Leafs after seven.

Christian Botnick relieved Lawrence and pitched a scoreless 8th inning, but the Baycats got to him in the bottom of the 9th.  Jackson doubled.  Spataro grounded out.   DeGrace and Castaldo walked, loading the bases with one out.  Atkinson singled to drive in Jackson and DeGrace.  Lewis singled to score Castaldo and tie the game.  Then with Atkinson on third, a wild pitch from Botnick got away from Keys and the baserunner scored the walkoff run.  9-8 final for Barrie.
