Game 35: Toronto Maple Leafs at Burlington Herd, July 27, 2017
Leafs win 20-6
The Toronto Maple Leafs scored early and often and ran away with a 20-6 blowout at the Barn at Nelson Park in Burlington last night.
Adam Garner delivered a strong start for the visitors, giving up just three hits and one run over seven innings. By the time he turned the ball over to the bullpen, the Leafs had demolished the Herd.
Every Leaf batsman got a hit on the night, most racking up two or more.
Rightfielder Daniel Szpik began the assault with a 3-run blast in the second inning.
Shortstop Ryan White hit an RBI double in the third, and Zac Orchard -- playing centerfield this night -- drove him in with a single. 5-0 Leafs midway through the third.
Garner had his only trouble of the night in the bottom of the third, when he allowed an RBI double to the Herd's Justin Gideon.
Third baseman Johnathan Solazzo drove in a run in the fourth.
Szpik added his fourth RBI of the night in the fifth, and another run was added to the score on a groundout by leftfielder Grant Tamane. 8-1 Leafs through five.
In the seventh, a sac fly by first baseman Julian Johnson made it 9-1.
Burlington completely lost control in the eighth inning and the Leafs literally doubled their lead. They sent fifteen men to the plate and scored nine runs off six hits and an error. Orchard put an exclamation point on things with a two-run homer, but you could argue there were a lot more exclamation points leaping off the Toronto bats in this game.
The final RBI tally for the Leafs looked like this: Szpik (4), D. Marra (3), Orchard (3), J. Marra (2), Hardie (2), White (2), Solazzo (1), Johnson (1).
Garner handed the ball over to Adam Odd and Adam Marra to finish off the game after the seventh. The Herd scratched out a few runs but this game was long over by then. Final score was 20-6 and Garner earned his first win of the season.
