Off the Schneid

Game 28: Brantford Red Sox at Toronto Maple Leafs, July 9, 2017

Leafs win 7-3

The Toronto Maple Leafs staged a four-run rally in the sixth inning this afternoon at Christie Pits to forge a come-from-behind 7-3 victory over the Brantford Red Sox.

Off the schneid, after losing four in a row.

Things looked rough in the early going. Leafs starter Marek Deska gave up a pair of solo home runs in the first inning. He settled down after that and pitched two scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Andrew Simonetti to start the fourth.

Meanwhile, Brantford starter Graham Tebbit held the Leafs hitless until the third, but the bats finally woke up in the bottom of the fourth.

Leftfielder Grant Tamane led off with a single. Catcher Justin Marra singled behind him, as did DH Tyler Hardie, who drove in Tamane with the Leafs' first run of the game. Shortstop Ryan White was up next, and he hit an RBI single to score Marra. That tied the game 2-2 through four.

Through three innings of work, Simonetti gave up just one hit. He also gave up an unearned run in the top of the fifth. He walked ex-Leaf Cody Mombourquette, who then stole second and took third on a wild pitch. A groundout by Brandon Dailey allowed Mombourquette to score and the Red Sox were back on top 3-2.

The Leafs tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth. Rightfielder Daniel Szpik reached first on an error. Centerfielder Connor Lewis was up next, and he attempted a sacrifice bunt. The ball was fielded by Tebbit, but thrown for an error, allowing Lewis to reach second and Szpik to land on third. A sac fly by Hardie brought Szpik home and the game was tied 3-3 through five.

Toronto exploded for four runs in the decisive sixth. Second baseman Dan Marra led off with a flyout to center. Third baseman Adam Odd then clouted one to the outfield and stretched it into a double, sliding safely in before the tag (above). Christian Garcia replaced Tebbit on the mound, but could not put out the fire. First baseman Brendan Keys hit the game-winner, an RBI single that scored Odd. Szpik then doubled to score Keys. A single by Lewis moved Szpik to third. A single by Tamane drove him in and moved Lewis to third. Justin Marra was up next, and his sac fly brought Lewis home to make it a 7-3 ballgame through six.

Simonetti handed the lead over to Justin Cicatello to start the seventh inning. Cicatello went on to pitch a classic, 70s-style three-inning save, shutting out the Carmines the rest of the way. It was Cicatello's first regular season save since 2014 and it got Simonetti off his own personal schneid with his first win of the season. Happiness and high fives all around.

Brantford 3-9-2
Toronto 7-13-1

W - Simonetti (1-4, 4.37)
L - Tebbit (1-1, 4.50)
S - Cicatello (1)

BOXSCORE

Today's win gives the Leafs a 12-13 record and they maintain their stranglehold on 4th place in the IBL standings. Their next game will be back at Christie Pits this Wednesday night, July 12th, when they face the still-undefeated Barrie Baycats.
