Oskie What The...?

Game 33: Toronto Maple Leafs at Hamilton Cardinals, July 21, 2017

Cardinals win 19-13

The bats are back.

After an early-July dry spell at the plate, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been pounding the ball at an impressive pace. Since last Sunday, the Leafs have racked up 59 hits in four games.

At the same time, the pitchin's gone missin'.

Your bewildering stat of the day: in their last four games, the Leafs have scored 49 runs and given up 49 runs.

The result has been two wins and two losses, including a wild defeat at Bernie Arbour Stadium last night. The Leafs entered the fourth inning with a 10-5 lead, but the Hamilton Cardinals scored nine runs in that frame alone and went on to win it by a pair of field goals.

The Leafs rocked Cards starter Nick Virdo to start the game big. Two runs in the first, four runs in the second, and Virdo was done.

The Cards got one run off of Toronto starter Zach Sloan in the bottom of the second, but the V-necks tacked on three more in the third to take a 9-1 lead.

It was looking like a laugher, but the Redbirds began pecking away. Soon, the visitors were swarmed. Hamilton put four runs on the scoreboard in the third, and then exploded for nine in the fourth to overtake Toronto and hang on for the unlikely 19-13 win.

Zac Orchard and Ryan White each drove in three of Toronto's runs. Justin Marra, Johnathan Solazzo, Daniel Szpik, Adam Odd and Connor Lewis each got an RBI. Grant Tamane led with four hits including a double.

For Hamilton, Matt Hart delivered five RBIs including a grand slam that tied the game in the fourth.

Sloan lasted 3 1/3 innings en route to the loss and was relieved by Adam Marra, Adam Odd and Solazzo for the remaining 4 2/3 innings.

At least the fries were tasty, and not as salty as this recap. Damme!

Toronto 13-13-3
Hamilton 19-17-3

W - Foden (2-0, 4.58)
L - Sloan (1-3, 7.46)

BOXSCORE

At 14-16, the Leafs continue to hang onto 4th place in the IBL standings. They return to Christie Pits this Sunday, July 23 for a clash with the Burlington Herd. First pitch is 2:00 pm.
