It took 12 innings and over three-and-a-half hours. When the dust finally settled at Coates Stadium last night, the Barrie Baycats had snatched victory from the grasp of the Toronto Maple Leafs to extend their undefeated season.
The 21-0 Baycats are having their best season ever, and showed why in the bottom of the ninth. They rallied for three runs to erase a 6-3 deficit, then won the game in the twelfth.
It looked as though the Leafs might become the first team to hang an L on the Baycats this year.
In the bottom of the first, the home side drew two walks and a double off of Toronto starter Zach Sloan to take a 1-0 lead. Sloan turned the ball over to Trevor Coughey, who went on to pitch nine innings in relief.
Barrie added a run in the third before Toronto struck back in the top of the fourth. Brett Lawson gave up a single to DH Jon Waltenbury, then proceeded to walk three batters in a row, allowing Wally to trot in with the Leafs' first run of the game. 2-1 Barrie through four.
The 'Cats added another run in the fifth to make it 3-1.
Lawson battled into the sixth before the Leafs knocked him out of the game. He gave up a walk to shortstop Ryan White and a single to second baseman Dan Marra. First baseman Brendan Keys then drove in White with an RBI single. That ended Lawson's night and Adam Rowe replaced him on the mound. Another run crossed the plate when pinch hitter Daniel Szpik reached safely on an error at short. Rowe got out of the inning but the game was now tied 3-3.
The Leafs took the lead in the eighth. White led off with a double, then scored when Dan Marra's sacrifice attempt was played for an error. Marra ended up on third base on the play, then scored on a sac fly by Keys. 5-3 Leafs through eight.
The visitors tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth. Pinch hitter Tyler Hardie reached first on an error. Reliever Chris Nagorski then gave up a single to catcher Justin Marra, and third baseman Johnathan Solazzo followed with an RBI single to score Hardie. That made it 6-3 Leafs and the Baycats were left with three outs to salvage their perfect season.
Barrie battled to the end and loaded the bases with one out. Coughey then delivered a wild pitch and a run crossed the plate. With two men still on, DH Kevin Atkinson smacked a double to bring both runs home and send the game into extras, tied 6-6.
Both clubs traded scoreless innings in the tenth and eleventh.
Andrew Simonetti was on the mound for Toronto in the bottom of the twelfth, and he gave up a leadoff walk to third baseman Branfy Infante. A sacrifice moved Infante to second, and he scored the winning run when a hit by shortstop Connor Morro was fielded for an error by White at short. It was a 7-6 final in 12, and Barrie remain undefeated.
Toronto 6-13-2
Barrie 7-12-3
W - Del Rosario (3-0, 4.00)
L - Simonetti (0-4, 4.50)
BOXSCORE
With the loss, the Leafs are mired in a four-game losing streak, but the streak will end this Saturday via a forfeit by the defunct Guelph Royals. The Leafs' 10-13 record keeps them in 4th place in the IBL standings, and they next take the field this Sunday, July 9 at Christie Pits when they host the Brantford Red Sox. First pitch is 2:00 pm.
