After taking care of one opponent's winning streak, the Toronto Maple Leafs ran right smack into another.
Two nights after handing the Barrie Baycats their first loss of the season, Toronto was in Sausagetown to take on the streaking Kitchener Panthers and their nine-game winning streak.
You can make that a 10-game streak. The Panthers jumped on Toronto pitching early and held on for a 13-8 win in a classic IBL slugfest.
Thirty-two hits were pounded out in this game, with the ballclubs splitting them almost evenly.
The Black Cats launched five home runs, including three off of Toronto starter Justin Cicatello. The Leafs ace lasted five innings, giving up six earned runs on 12 hits, striking out just two. Adam Garner and Adam Marra combined to pitch the final three innings as the Leafs attempted a late comeback.
Down 13-6 after seven innings, Toronto scratched out a pair of runs but ran out of outs. It was not a great night for aces, but Noelvis Entenza of the Panthers battled through seven innings while surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits and striking out five. Mike Schnurr came on in the ninth to put out a Leafs rally and secure the win for Entenza.
On the Leafs side of the boxscore, first baseman Daniel Szpik led the way with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Catcher Justin Marra also got three hits with one RBI. Grant Tamane, Zac Orchard, Dan Marra and Greg Carrington each drove in a run.
Toronto 8-15-4
Kitchener 13-17-1
W - Entenza (6-0, 4.06)
L - Cicatello (3-3, 3.47)
S - Schnurr (4)
The Leafs remain in 4th place in the IBL standings with a 14-15 record. Their road trip continues tonight at Bernie Arbour Stadium, where they will meet up with the Hamilton Cardinals and the best french fries in the Intercounty Baseball League.
